EPISODE 5 – Aborigines Rights Protection Society
Storyline:
A proposed land bill ruffles the feathers of the intelligentsia and elite class and threatens to rock the boat of the indigenous natives and chiefs within the Gold Coast.
Onto such a scene steps a group of men committed and ready to oppose this bill and defend the rights of the indigenous people to their lands and their properties. In their efforts to counter the injustice imposed on the natives, they succeed in garnering the support of the people and most importantly, the chiefs who are at the heart of land issues.
The rising threat that this group now poses to the British crown forces them to make certain concessions.
John Mensah Sarbah, J.P Sey and Ahuma Attoh congratulate each other as the first copy of The Gold Coast Aborigines newspaper rolls off the press with the screaming headline “OUR LAND IS OURS”.
These men together with chiefs have set themselves on a collision course with the British Governor William Maxwell over control of the rights to land use in the Gold Coast. By this action, the first political opposition movement was born; the Gold Coast Aborigines Rights Protection Society.
But will this move be enough to appease them and quell their appetite for justice for their people?
